The Drama Teacher decided that they would do “Alice in Wonderland.”One of the classes was given the task of coming up with costume ideas. Most,as I understand it,resembled the Disney version, especially the Queen of Hearts. The teacher asked my daughter to come up with a design. That night she drew up a design. Unfortunately,I can’t find the original drawing, but the costume looks just like it. She took it to school the next day and the teacher was thrilled. She said,“This will be your final project.”
We immediately started looking for fabrics. We found red Christmas Damask tablecloths with a rectangular pattern not unlike a playing card. It was perfect. There was lots of left over lace from a couple of plays (it pays to hoard) which came in handy. Coupons and thrift store finds kept the cost waaaaaay down. Full price would have been prohibitive. Some things were donated too. The king of Heart’s coat was made from the same material
So launched the trials and tribulations of my daughter having to make a very ornate dress which was far beyond her abilities. I was expected to guide her along the way, which I did. It was an ordeal. It was truly the project from hell,so my daughter dubbed it,Beelzebub’s Ballgown.
Since it was a final project and would be entered at the District Drama competition,I was not allowed to help. I could only guide her and tell her how to do it. There was much celebration and the angels sang when the last stitch had been taken.
THE DUCHESS
I always liked the hat in the Lewis Carroll version of the Duchess,so that’s what I made. The fabric was several very large Damask tablecloths. It was inexpensive and it did the job. The hat was trimmed with pearls.
